Between cosmopolitanism and parochialism: return migration of early-career Israeli academics

Abstract Mobile academics have traditionally been conceived as cosmopolitan subjects who favor cultural diversity and search for new professional opportunities abroad. Their return to the homeland could therefore be interpreted a sign of parochialism, which narrows down their limits exposure global resources. In this article, we compare returning non-returning with respect parochial and/or tendencies. Drawing on sample 223 Israeli Early-Career Researchers (ECRs), examine cosmopolitan—or otherwise parochial—propensities assess effect they decisions. We use statistical tests analyze effects orientation, attachment homeland-based national community, patriotic feelings propensity return. Our findings suggest that in comparison co-nationals opted remain abroad, ECRs exhibit higher levels reflected through inter alia stronger communal dispositions well geographically limited job search.
